During an annual fire extinguisher inspection, we first observe the pressure gauge to see if the fire extinguisher is in green. Next, we search for any rust, dents, or damage that would prohibit the fire extinguisher from working properly. Last, we see when the fire extinguisher was manufactured or when the last maintenance was done. The classic red fire extinguisher has a required maintenance every 6-years. This maintenance will ensure the internal parts of the fire extinguisher are in good condition and will work in the event of a fire.
The general rule of thumb is one fire extinguisher for every 3,000 square feet and every 75 ft. of travel distance. Travel distance represents the distance it would take to walk to the fire extinguisher with no obstruction in the way such as: walls, counter tops, desks, etc. Ceilings 10 ft. or higher will require a 10# ABC fire extinguisher. Other hazards such as paper storage, flammable liquids, kitchen appliances, and so on will also require additional coverage. Absolutely! NFPA 101-NFPA 70 and OSHA 29CF1910 require exit lights to be inspected on an annual basis or once a year. This inspection will confirm the exit light is proper illuminated and the back-up battery is still operable. The back-up battery is very important, because it allows the exit light to remain on in the event of a power outage so pedestrians can safely exit the building.
